What is a podcast?

Podcasting is like TIVO for your radio except you don't need a radio, just a computer with internet access.  Podcasts are "time-shifted" shows.  You can listen whenever you want.  If you have an MP3 player you can listen whenever and wherever you want.

Podcatcher Software

Do you get tired of checking back at this website to see if we have a "new" podcast?  You can use "podcatcher" software to do that for you automagically.  It checks all the podcast sites you have subscribed to and will automagically download any new shows for you automagically...  Have I said automagically enough?  The podcatcher software really make the whole podcast listening experience easier.

But, I only have dial-up

If you are concerned about a slow internet connection, you can use "podcatcher" software to automagically download the shows at a time that is convenient for you - like the middle of the night.  This will allow you to listen to a show without having to wait for it to download.  It will already be on your computer or MP3 player.

Easier Possibility

I've thought about offering an MP3 player with podcatcher software already installed and subscribed to our show.  All you would need is a computer hooked to the internet and a USB port. I haven't put that all together yet, but if you might be interested, let me know through any feedback method.

Making our podcast

If you are thinking of creating your own podcast, our "studio" is made up of the following:

We have one MXL 990 condenser microphone with pop filter.  So far we are happy with the results.

The Shure PG-58 microphone with pop filter was the first mic I started recording with.

The Behringer UB-802 mixer seems to be a mainstay among podcasters.

Because of our noisy environment, the Behringer MDX-2600 audio processor and gate has really helped clean up the noise level in our podcasts.  There is a bunch to learn with this tool, but we keep learning.

We use Windows XP to run PodProducer and Audacity. An open source, powerful, audio editing software package.
We use Liberated Syndication to host our podcasts.

The Setup

I feed the two microphones into the Behringer UB-802.  The output of that goes into the Behringer MDX2600 processor which then feeds into the line-in on the computer.

The next iteration of the setup will have the two microphones feed into two separate Behringer VX2496 processors which will then feed into the Behringer UB-802.  The output of the mixer will feed both an iRiver MP3 recorder and the line-in on the computer.

The Process

We start with an outline for the show.  We find, mark, and prep the books we want to quote.  Similarly, we prep any audio clips we want to include.  We add the audio clips to one of the "decks" in PodProducer.

We set all the knobs and dials as closely as we can as marked them from the previous podcast.  We do a final microphone level check and are ready to record.  We try to do it as "live" as possible to cut down on the post production work.

After finishing the show, we edit the MP3 tags and save the MP3 file with PodProducer.  I open the file in Audacity and begin by editing out the bloopers and long pauses.  I will then adjust any errors in levels and finally normalize any DC offset.  I will then save the file as an Audacity file and export it to an MP3 file with a sequential letter suffix indicating the version.  So, if you see an "f" at the end of the file name, it has really been through the grinder...

With the file complete, I sign-in to LibSyn and upload the file.  I'll add a title and description, clean up the MP3 tags, and publish the post.  I'll then add an icon to our websites main page and update the mouse-over comments.  I then click on everything and make sure it points to the correct file and that the file will download and play.
